About event
Learn the basics of decorative hand-embroidery, and find inspiration in images of spectacular embroideries throughout history.
Textile artist and IMM Librarian, Carrie Sieh will present an engaging, brief lecture on the global history of decorative embroidery, then lead participants in the process of transferring designs, preparing fabric, and learning basic embroidery stitches.
All materials and take-home supplies will be provided.
OBJECTIVES
- Learn four basic embroidery stitches: backstitch, chain stitch, satin stitch, and knot stitch.
- Understand the historical context of decorative embroidery.
- Produce a piece of handmade embroidery. Participants will choose whether to create an embroidery that can be used as an applique or to embroider directly on their own garment.
*Optional: bring a garment that you would like to embellish with embroidery.
