Current International Students

As an M-1 student in the U.S., you have rules and requirements to properly maintain your M-1 status. Violating M status is a serious issue and can lead to direct impact on your ability to remain in the US to continue your studies or to return later, even in other U.S. visa statuses.

1. Keep your local U.S. address up-to-date

Keep your local residential address up-to-date, in case you move, it must be updated within 10 days every time you move.

2. Maintain full-time enrollment.

You must be enrolled full-time each term. For immigration purposes, students must complete a minimum of 18 hours of study per week.

3. Reduced course load or withdrawal

If for some reason you must reduce your course load below full-time or withdraw from your program, you are required to have approval from your DSO before doing so.

4. Avoid violating IMM student policy or U.S. laws

If you are found in violation of the IMM Student Policy, or have been arrested or violated U.S. laws it’s important to contact DSO as soon as possible to understand what the impact may be on your M-1 status, as well as next steps and resources for support. Remember, any violation (suspension, dismissal, arrest) that impacts your ability to be an enrolled full-time student, will have a negative impact on your M-1 status.

5. Attend the school noted on your I-20

You must have a current, valid I-20 from the school you are attending full-time.

6. Keep your I-20 valid at all times and understand your completion date.

Your I-20 is only valid as long as you are a continuing, full-time student in your program. If you graduate early, your I-20 will be shortened to the last day of your final semester of enrollment. If your final semester is Summer you MUST be enrolled in Summer! You must notify DSO of your early completion in order to avoid overstaying. If you need more time to complete your program, apply for an Extension of Program BEFORE the current completion date on your I-20.

7. Get a travel endorsement and understand your travel documents

Before any international travel, review the necessary travel documents and obtain a travel signature from DSO. Travel endorsements are valid for 6 months during the program of study, but we recommend obtaining a new signature for every trip.

Also we recommend traveling on weekends, holidays and breaks between every term.

8. Understand your grace period after completion

M-1s have a 30 day grace period following the end of their program of study.

9. Work, Internships and Volunteering opportunities.

M-1 students can not work or engage in internships while they are studying at IMM. However , they may participate in volunteering opportunities as long as their class schedule is not affected and they don’t receive a payment for it.

10. M-1 students & M-2 dependents must maintain proper health insurance

IMM requires their international students and dependents to have health insurance.
