Program Overview

The Fashion Summer Camp program caters to aspiring young students aged 14 to 18 seeking a pre-college course to explore the nuances of the fashion industry. This immersive program covers key areas of fashion, including design, styling, and business. Guided by our esteemed higher education faculty, students will delve into current fashion trends, gain insights into textile selection and garment construction techniques, and examine the crucial aspects of marketing and branding within the fashion realm. Additionally, participants will actively contribute to the enhancement of their college fashion portfolio, preparing them for future academic and professional pursuits in the dynamic world of fashion.

SUBJECTS

FASHION ILLUSTRATION + PORTFOLIO BUILDING: In Fashion Sketching class, you’ll explore and improve your drawing skills, learn about basic figures and fashion illustration, and develop a sense of fabric movement, draping, and light reflections.

COLOR THEORY + DIGITAL PRINT DESIGN: Color Theory is a course that offers students a foundation in the processes and interactions of color. Students will address and apply the theories of color design to compositions and then develop mood boards and print designs for clothing.

FASHION BUSINESS: Students will learn how to develop ideas for a business, learning about excel, line sheets, how to write a mission statement for a business, and the key elements of how the fashion business works through case study research.

FASHION STYLING: Students will learn the roles and responsibilities of stylists and will take part in planning and staging a fashion photoshoot. They will also learn to provide professional fashion advice, from wardrobe styling to creative direction to media management.

HISTORY OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY: Exploring the history of photography is of significance to the stylist as the storyteller. Students will develop their unique fashion point of view and learn how to translate it into styling by pulling, sorting, and organizing images into mood boards.

UPCYCLING: Students will learn to be creative and resourceful as they repurpose used fabrics and trims into stylish new fashion items while being empowered to do their part in reducing our carbon footprint.

TRENDS FOR FASHION: Students will delve into trend research and forecasting methodologies. They will also analyze consumer behavior and emerging fashion trends.

FASHION SHOW PRODUCTION: Students will learn to understand what goes into producing a fashion show from start to finish, from creating the garment to seeing it on a runway, choosing models, makeup, accessories, and more.

Amy Berkowitz

Fashion Program Leader Events & Competitions

Amy Berkowitz obtained her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1978 and subsequently ventured into the Film & Television Industry, contributing to the special effects for the inaugural Star Wars movie. She went on to establish Artgear, a renowned fashion label favored by global celebrities. In 1994, she achieved a Master’s of Art in Teaching and has imparted her knowledge in art and design for over 25 years. Amy’s proficiency encompasses drawing, painting, textile design, and fashion. She presently serves as a faculty member at Marangoni Istituto Miami.

Saul Kapilivsky

Fashion Design Professor

Saul Kapilivsky, originating from a background in garment production, earned a Fashion Design MFA from the Academy of Art University. His career spans over 34 years, during which he created Mother of the Bride dresses, introduced wholesale evening wear lines, and styled renowned personalities like Aretha Franklin and Deidre Hall. Additionally, he has provided attire for participants in competitions like Miss America and Miss Universe while also representing the US in the 1988 Air France Concours International Des Jeunes Créateurs De Mode.

Elliott Prada

Summer Camp Professor

Elliott Prada is an Illustrator and Textile Designer with over 30 years of experience as a freelancer and university instructor. His primary responsibilities have been designing for several major brands and textile, and surface design companies in New York, LA, and Miami, along with teaching for over 25 years at several institutions and currently as an instructor at Marangoni. Elliot graduated with a degree in Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, and graduated from Miami International University with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. He is the owner of ‘La-Isla Gallery and Gifts’ which specializes in Latin American art and apparel.

Taryn Hipwell

Summer Camp Professor

Taryn Hipwell is a global speaker and passionate healthy fashion consultant. She specializes in aligning brands and future designers with best practices in transparency, circularity, and sourcing cleaner fabrics and raw materials. She is the author of How to Shop for Shift, an instructor at Istituto Marangoni Miami, the NEW Remake co-Community Organizer for Florida, and the founder of Beyond the Label, which started as a partnership with TEDxLA to educate locals on the true health, social, and environmental costs of their fashion purchases. Taryn is committed to creating fun, authentic, and bold experiences that shatter stereotypes, shift perceptions, and change lives. She has launched Upcycling Labs at the Sundance Film Festival, CSU, and UCLA. She has spoken about sustainability, transparency, circularity, diversity, and toxins in fabrics to over 10,000 students at 30 top fashion schools and universities around the world, including the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Parsons, NYU, and YOUNGA, a first-of-its-kind global youth takeover of the United Nations.

Candela Ledesma

Alumni | Fashion Business Professor

Candela is a creative, enthusiastic, and responsible Fashion Business graduate who demonstrated a love for tackling new challenges and seizing opportunities for growth within the program. With a passion for the dynamic world of fashion, Candela is a dedicated and multi-tasking individual known for her hard work and commitment to excellence. Her journey at Istituto Marangoni Miami has been marked by invaluable support and countless enriching experiences since the inception of her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Business. From the outset, Candela has embraced every opportunity to expand her knowledge and skills, immersing herself fully in the business world

Nicole Leave

Alumni | Fashion Styling Professor

Nicole Leave is a Venezuelan-French Fashion Stylist with a sustainability, innovation, and sociology background. Nicole has a BFA in Fashion Styling from Istituto Marangoni Miami. She is known for her vibrant and daring approach to aesthetics. Her signature style embraces a colorful, experimental, bold, and surreal sensibility, pushing boundaries and creating captivating visual narratives through fashion. Nicole began her career as a professional stylist early in college and developed a love for meaningful storytelling in editorials. She now covers every arena in styling, from personal to commercials, runways, videos, lifestyle, and editorials. The stylist’s illustrious career encompasses productions with prestigious brands such as Chanel, Diesel, and Louis Vuitton, along with runway styling for esteemed events like Miami Swim Week and Dominican Republic Fashion Week, and editorials for fashion magazines, Lifestyles South Florida, Regia, and Acontece. Complementing her professional achievements, Nicole passionately imparts her fashion knowledge by teaching fashion courses for Istituto Marangoni Miami youth programs.

Rafel Nunez

Fashion Photography Professor

Rafael Nuñez embarked on his career as a Director of Photography in Venezuela in 1987, attaining national and international recognition in films, dramas, and a diverse range of television programs for RCTV, HBO, ESPN, Discovery Channel, HBO Sport, Televen, Venevisión, Telemundo, Nickelodeon, TV spots, and documentaries. Since a young age, I have held a profound interest in teaching within the realm of visual arts. I have had the privilege of working as a facilitator, instructor, and consultant at esteemed institutions, including Focus Studio Photography Academy, Miami Institute of Photography, Universidad Central de Venezuela, and Escuela Nacional de Cine, among others. Furthermore, I have collaborated closely with visual artists in the conception, production, and realization of video art, photography, and large-scale installations. As part of my educational endeavors, I have undertaken a personal project to document visual artists through audiovisual means in South Florida, with the intention of capturing and promoting artistic expressions.

Stephanie Dickstein

Fashion Business Professor

Stephanie Dickstein draws on her extensive background in the fashion industry, starting from her early days in retail alongside her mother, where she honed her keen eye for customer preferences. With a BBA from the University of Miami and experience at Burdines (now Macy’s), she excelled in roles as an assistant buyer and later as a Fashion Merchandising Director. Her career took her to fashion capitals worldwide, where she scouted trends and innovations. Back in Miami, she combined her passion for jewelry design with education, earning a Master’s in Art Education. Today, she shares her wealth of experience and industry insights with students, emphasizing the importance of a discerning eye and business acumen in fashion. You might find her at local antique shows or boutiques, always on the lookout for inspiration and trends to inspire her students.

HOW TO APPLY

  • To apply to Istituto Marangoni Miami pre-college programs, you must be between 14 and 18 years old or still studying in high school. If you meet the requirements, complete your online registration. After this, students must submit a copy of their ID to complete their student file. Upon completion of your registration, more information on enrollment, schedules, and housing options will be sent to you prior to your class start.
