Fashion Styling

Define and reinvent image for fashion shoots and personal style. Short courses in Fashion Styling provide participants with the principle techniques in creating contemporary images for fashion magazines and online media channels.

Fashion stylists play a major role in the style and image of a fashion collection, brand or product. Stylists work on the presentation of creative ideas and upcoming trends to produce successful visual communication proposals for magazine photo shoots, editorial and advertorial campaigns, for online brand promotion, or social media channels to name just a few.

Fashion styling courses - image

Starting with theoretical concepts related to image, styling, photography and visual communication, participants are introduced to key notions and techniques in graphic design and photography, in creating and editing real photo shoots, as well as editorial styling proposals for magazines, blogs and social media.

Participants also take a close look at marketing for fashion brands and learn how to apply visual communication skills to communicate the right image and message in order to create marketing proposals for a strong brand identity. To further enrich participants understanding and appreciation of this global, fast paced industry, cultural issues cover the history of art and dress, a brief history of photography and image, and the ‘fashion system’.

For personal enrichment and enjoyment, avocational courses are offered in a series of four (4) distinct levels ranging from a foundation introductory level, working through to a higher comprehension of skill and study. This enables a ‘flexible learning experience’ for participants to select and build on their own experience and personal achievement.

This course starts with an introduction to styling for the fashion industry, together with an overview of the ‘Fashion System’. Visual communication and presentation skills are introduced, alongside basic techniques in creative writing for print and online media proposals. The History of Art and Dress further supports participants understanding of style through key historic periods, as well as a basic history of fashion photography and iconographic research.

The Fashion Branding Unit provides students with an introduction to marketing. Theoretical studies of marketing and brands create an awareness of the meaning of identity for contemporary fashion markets and contextualize how brands operate and respond to innovation, demands and change within these markets. Students will research and propose a new fashion visual brand identity for a clearly identified market segment in realising a advertorial supported by a written rationale which evidences the application of information, validity of ideas and relevance of work.

In this Fashion Editorial Unit, the students plan, organise and realise their first model photo shootings using props. After learning analytical and interpretation techniques, the students interpret a concept in a contemporary manner, work on the set and direct the photographer and their team (hair stylist, makeup artist, model, and assistant(s)). Students also discover beauty, hair and makeup from the history to the upcoming trends. This area enhances the students’ skills in being able to consider the models’ appearance and select the most appropriate makeup and hairstyle.
