Level 1: Introduction to fashion styling

Program Description

In the first level of the One Year Vocational Program in Fashion Styling, students are introduced to learning about the professional aspects of the fashion styling industry, career and employment opportunities. In this Unit, the students will gain an in-depth understanding of the fashion system and the history of fashion photography. ​​Students will conduct iconographic research collating images from different sources unraveling their meaning. Visual communication and presentation skills (CAD) are introduced with a main focus on the Adobe Photoshop pack. Students are introduced to a brief historical overview of the emergence of criticism as well as looking at criticism in practice, investigating: how to write for printed and online media. A broad picture of the evolution of Art and Dress from the Renaissance to the early 20th Century will be drawn. The students will explore the relationship between artistic movements and the development of dress, within a wider social, cultural, historical framework. 

SUBJECTS 

Each level consists of 6 courses for the entire 11-week level. This will total in 18 hours a week of class, each course is 3 hour blocks; the professors grant a break between classes. There will be weekly assignments, midterms and final projects for each class. 

FASHION STYLING 

Class lessons will include the history of fashion styling, editorial and magazine analysis, mood board and mini mapping, the development of trends, and wardrobe analysis. Students will work diligently on their reflective learning journal, focusing on their 5-day written report and crafting their fashion mood boards. Students will analyze at least 3 photo shoots that underline their own unique fashion style. A concise written comment for each editorial is required. These analyses will be seamlessly integrated into the reflective learning journal.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Students will learn how to interpret the basics of a wardrobe through mood boards, using visual communication and presentation skills (CAD). Students will learn the principle of layers in Photoshop and how to organize, group and transform layers. Moreover, comprehend the adjustment of layers, tone and color corrections. Through this, they will practice their skills to create a professional moldboard practicing the skills of retouching and blending images. Additionally, students will learn about typography, grids and layouts, and portrait and landscape images. Through this, the students will gain insight on the basics of post production editing that will allow them to create their first still life photoshoot. 

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

This course provides a comprehensive study of the art and techniques involved in capturing stunning fashion images, emphasizing composition, lighting, and visual storytelling. Students will learn about the job of a photographer and the team behind a fashion editorial, they will learn the language of photography and the technical words of how to talk about an image, learn about the digital camera basics, and then step into the studio to learn about the lighting principles and photo shooting practices. 

FASHION CRITICISM AND DIGITAL WRITING 

The course offers an exploration of the intersection between fashion, media, and critical analysis, equipping students with the skills to write compelling fashion-focused content for digital platforms. The class will go over the rise of art criticism and how to critique art production. 

FASHION SYSTEM 

Students will learn a comprehensive study of the interconnected components within the fashion industry, covering topics such as fashion production, design processes, marketing strategies, retail operations, consumer behavior, and the influences that shape the dynamic fashion ecosystem.

 LEARNING OUTCOMES 

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Categorize visuals, texts and references related to the diverse roles of a professional fashion stylist.
  • Outline the processes involved in the organization of a photo shooting.
  • Interpret the basics of a wardrobe through mood boards, using visual communication and presentation skills (CAD).
  • Investigate the ideologies and principles informing the fashion system.
  • Analyze the relationship of art, fashion and style within their cultural context.

These learning outcomes interplay perfectly with the next level of the program for the students to progressively grow as a fashion stylist through a personalized class curriculum and hands-on experience. 

HOW TO APPLY 

The Vocational Programs provide flexibility to the student that does not want to commit for a full year program but wants to start a section of the program to see if it is the right fit. As to this, you are able to apply to the individual levels of the Vocational Programs and then see if you want to continue. To apply to a stand-alone level, students are able to select the ‘11-week level courses’ in the application form.  Students will then be able to apply to their corresponding level and program.
