Program Description

Students are introduced to learning about the professional aspects of the fashion styling industry and fundamentals. Visual communication, graphic design, and fashion photography is put in practice through hands-on experience. Students are provided with a general overview of fashion communication through digital media such as websites, blogs and social networks (from the history to the current Social Media influences). Students gain an in-depth understanding of the new media environments and their contemporary applications. Students will create a personal blog, supported by a digital research journal, using visual communication and presentation skills. In addition, the students focus on their own editorial policy, on categories and subcategories which will be supported by writing pieces, images and videos. Students will also explore the diverse career paths a fashion stylist can undertake in professional practice. Projects will be undertaken informing the development and realization of creative outcomes in Trend Forecasting, Advertising and Visual Merchandising; the projects will be supported by the use of Photoshop and InDesign. A broad picture of the evolution of Art and Dress of the 20th Century will be drawn. The students will explore the relationship between artistic movements and the development of dress, within a wider social, cultural, historical framework. 

SUBJECTS 

Each level consists of 6 courses for the entire 11-week level. This will total in 18 hours a week of class, each course is 3 hour blocks; the professors grant a break between classes. THere will be weekly assignments, midterms and final projects for each class. 

FASHION STYLING

This course immerses students in the art and craft of styling, focusing on developing an eye for fashion aesthetics, understanding the role of trends, mastering the coordination of outfits, exploring editorial photo shoots, and gaining practical skills in creating captivating visual narratives. The course will go in depth in still life in fashion styling, analyze editorial and advertising campaigns, and then create their own still life photoshoot. 

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION

Students acquire the skills to create captivating visual content, employing graphic design principles and visual storytelling techniques to effectively communicate fashion concepts. The course will go in depth in practical skills in Photoshop and InDesign in order to have advanced ideas on how to create their moodboards and styling proposals. 

PHOTOBLOGGING AND LIFESTYLE

Students delve into the art of photoblogging and lifestyle content creation, learning to curate visually stunning imagery, develop a personal brand aesthetic, and create engaging lifestyle narratives that resonate with audiences in the digital realm. The class will go over the most influential Still Life photographers from the past in contemporary editorials and advertising campaigns to then go into studio practice. 

SOCIAL MEDIA

This course equips students with strategies to navigate social media platforms effectively, enabling them to build brand presence, engage with audiences, curate visually compelling content, and implement successful social media marketing campaigns. Students will analyze social media from MySpace to Meta to explore its development, to then analyze the Social Dilemma, influencer marketing, intellectual and property rights, and online magazines and personal blogs. With this content, the students will delve into their final project of creating their own personal blog. 

PROFESSIONAL FASHION PANORAMA

Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the fashion industry’s landscape, including trends, market analysis, branding, and global business strategies, preparing them for successful careers in the field. Students will delve into window compositions and color theory, as well as in-store layout and thresholds, and mannequin to understand and analyze the retail space. Another aspect of the course will be analyzing advertising channels and developing a styling concept for an advertising campaign including trend forecasting. 

HISTORY OF DRESS

Students explore the evolution of fashion and clothing throughout different time periods, studying cultural, social, and historical influences on dress. Students will learn about the historical and contemporary images inspired by the 20’s to 40’s (different fields – such as films, fashion, architecture, literature) including some editorials and advertising campaigns. The student must focus on the important topics and details seen in class.

 LEARNING OUTCOMES 

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Integrate all personal research and information to create a blog. 
  • Collate primary and secondary research. 
  • Apply a range of graphic and CAD design skills to develop visual projects. 
  • Communicate a proposal for a commercial media campaign based on an upcoming megatrend in developing a visual merchandising window and an advertising campaign. 
  • Analyze the relationship of art, fashion and style within their cultural context. 

These learning outcomes interplay perfectly with the next level of the program for the students to progressively grow as a fashion stylist through a personalized class curriculum and hands-on experience. 

HOW TO APPLY 

The Vocational Programs provide flexibility to the student that does not want to commit for a full year program but wants to start a section of the program to see if it is the right fit. As to this, you are able to apply to the individual levels of the Vocational Programs and then see if you want to continue. To apply to a stand-alone level, students are able to select the ‘11-week level courses’ in the application form.  Students will then be able to apply to their corresponding level and program.
