Level 1: The fashion system

Program Description

At this level, students approach the fashion system through the study of the fashion industry and its historical framework, utilizing a variety of research methods in order to study the principles of business and economy within the sector. The macro and micro business environment is studied to identify factors affecting fashion business. Students are introduced to core marketing principles and their application by fashion brands as well as contemporary issues in fashion such as CSR. The relationship between fashion and various art forms are explored and discussed providing students with a holistic view of the industry.

SUBJECTS

Each level consists of 6 courses for the entire 11-week level. This will total in 18 hours a week of class, each course is 3 hour blocks; the professors grant a break between classes. THere will be weekly assignments, midterms and final projects for each class. 

FASHION SYSTEM 

The fashion system course teaches students how to develop a business marketing ‘mind-set’. Students are then introduced to more specific arguments in communication, pricing, and buying, as well as a 360 vision of fashion products and production principles and processes.

HISTORY OF DRESS

In this course students learn about the creation of a brand and its identity, working from a business, marketing and visual point of view. They also move on to further study the financial aspects within fashion. Students will learn about the historical and contemporary images inspired by the 20’s to 40’s (different fields – such as films, fashion, architecture, literature) including some editorials and advertising campaigns. The student must focus on the important topics and details seen in class.

TREND MOVEMENTS

Learn about the image management of a brand through communications strategies and luxury business models to create an individual business plan and website. Students will learn the influencing factors of trend forecasting such as the social context, the cultural context, and contemporary culture. Moreover, they will learn about the trend resources and macrotrends, fashion show and style analysis and moldboard and visual communication. 

FASHION MARKETING

Understand and define the relevance of marketing within the fashion system and identify the different elements of the marketing process. The students will start learning about key marketing concepts to then dive into the marketing environment, segmentation, targeting and positioning, and consumer behavior. 

PRINCIPLES OF BUSINESS & IT TOOLS 

Recognize the importance of the principles of the fashion business and be able to analyze a variety of factors affecting the industry structure. These factors include macroeconomics, supply, demand and market mechanism, price elasticity of demand, output and cost approaches, and market structure. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES 

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Recognize the context and structure of the fashion industry, e.g. suppliers, manufacturers, turnaround times, schedules.
  • Analyze the relationship between art, fashion, and style within their cultural context.
  • Understand and define the relevance of marketing within the fashion system and identify the different elements of the marketing process. 
  • Recognize the importance of the principles of the fashion business and be able to analyze a variety of factors affecting the industry structure.

These learning outcomes interplay perfectly with the next levels of the One Year Vocational Program for the students to progressively grow as a fashion business student and professional through a personalized class curriculum and hands-on experience. 

HOW TO APPLY 

The Vocational Programs provide flexibility to the student that does not want to commit for a full year program but wants to start a section of the program to see if it is the right fit. As to this, you are able to apply to the individual levels of the Vocational Programs and then see if you want to continue. To apply to a stand-alone level, students are able to select the ‘11-week level courses’ in the application form.  Students will then be able to apply to their corresponding level and program.
