Level 3: Contemporary design synergy

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Thursday May 2nd , 2024

Program Description

In this level, students will extend their knowledge of interior design project development. The fundamental role of research and analysis in the formulation of project ideas and direction will be emphasized. The acquisition of investigative and representational tools will support this process. In the Research and Concept Development classes, students will apply a methodological approach to analyze two separate interior design 2 project typologies that have experienced enormous mutations in recent history: the contemporary interior living environment and the workspace. Students will trace the cultural, social, and technological changes that have impacted the conception of these primary interior environments, analyzing space, function, and style. Characteristics of lifestyle and the relationship between the private living sphere and the work context, as well as contemporary trends, will be examined in detail. Through analytical and creative interpretation students will translate observations into architectural and design concepts. This will establish the foundations for project development of a dedicated brief. The students will also continue to expand their CAD skills and be introduced to software for project visualizations.

SUBJECTS

Each level consists of 6 courses for the entire 11-week level. This will total in 18 hours a week of class, each course is 3 hour blocks; the professors grant a break between classes. There will be weekly assignments, midterms and final projects for each class.

RESEARCH AND CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

In the ‘Research and Concept Development’ class, students will delve into the rigorous and methodical world of evidence-based design, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping effective and impactful design solutions. They will be introduced to a systematic approach where research and empirical evidence serve as the backbone for design decisions, ensuring that designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functionally sound and user-centric. Through a combination of case studies, hands-on projects, and analytical exercises, students will learn how to gather, interpret, and apply data to inform their design strategies. By the end of the course, they will have a comprehensive understanding of how evidence-based design can address contemporary challenges, leading to more informed, innovative, and effective design outcomes.

DESIGN PROJECT II

In the ‘Design Project II’ class, students will embark on a deep analytical journey, critically examining the work of selected practitioners in the design field. They will be guided on how to meticulously source and gather information from select, reputable sources, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the design philosophies and methodologies of these practitioners. Through this investigative process, students will develop the skills to compare and contrast different design approaches, offering a well-informed critical evaluation. The culmination of their research and analysis will be presented in a compelling oral and visual presentation, where they will articulate their insights, observations, and critiques, showcasing their ability to engage with design discourse at an advanced level.

LIGHTING DESIGN

In the ‘Lighting Design’ class, students will delve into the intricate and transformative world of illumination, understanding the profound impact of light on environments and spaces. They will be taught to critically examine various light sources, discerning their unique values and applications in different settings. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical exercises, students will learn to determine what constitutes quality lighting design, ensuring spaces are both functional and evocative. The course will also guide students in constructing detailed lighting scenarios, emphasizing the importance of technical support documentation. This ensures that their lighting designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but also technically sound and compliant with industry standards. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the nuances of lighting design, equipped to illuminate spaces with precision and creativity.

DESIGN PROJECT II LAB

In the ‘Design Project II Lab’ class, students will be immersed in a hands-on design experience, where they will be tasked with constructing a holistic interior design project. Drawing upon the methodological approach they’ve rigorously examined throughout their studies, they will be guided to apply these principles in a practical setting. This lab will challenge them to think critically and creatively, ensuring every element of their design—from spatial planning to material selection—is meticulously addressed and harmoniously integrated. The objective is to produce a project that is complete in all its parts, showcasing the students’ comprehensive understanding of design methodologies and their ability to translate theoretical knowledge into tangible, well-executed design solutions.

ADVANCED DIGITAL DESIGN

In the ‘Advanced Digital Design’ class, students will dive deeper into the world of computer-aided design, mastering the capabilities of CAD software to bring their design visions to life. They will be trained to produce intricate 2D technical drawings, capturing every detail with precision and clarity. Beyond flat representations, the course will also emphasize the creation of 3D volumetric studies, allowing students to explore and represent spaces and objects in a more immersive and dynamic manner. Throughout the course, a strong emphasis will be placed on adhering to standard drawing conventions, ensuring that students’ outputs are both technically accurate and industry-compliant. Through a combination of guided tutorials, hands-on exercises, and real-world projects, students will emerge with a robust skill set, ready to tackle complex design challenges using advanced digital tools.

DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY

In the ‘Design for Sustainability’ class, students will embark on a journey to understand the profound intersection of design and sustainability. They will be introduced to the core principles of sustainable design, gaining insights into how these principles influence every facet of the design process—from material selection and decision-making to construction methodologies and final implementation. The course will emphasize the importance of making design choices that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. Beyond the environmental aspects, students will also examine the socio-cultural viewpoints that play a pivotal role in shaping design projects. They will learn to appreciate and incorporate diverse perspectives, ensuring that their designs are both sustainable and culturally sensitive. Through lectures, discussions, and hands-on projects, students will emerge with a holistic understanding of how to create designs that are in harmony with both nature and society.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate evidence-based design as a strategy for research and analysis that informs contemporary design strategies.
  • Compare the work of selected practitioners using information obtained through select sources offering a critical evaluation in an oral and visual presentation.
  • Examine the value of light sources and determine quality lighting design environments and spaces. Construct lighting scenarios with technical support documentation.
  • Construct an interior design project following the methodological approach examined that is complete in all its parts, including a defined and coordinated CMF proposal, and that is consistent with the personal concept.
  • Interpret the primary components of space, function, and style within a personal interior design proposal that substantiates a coordinated approach.
  • Employ CAD software to produce 2D technical drawings and 3D volumetric studies to represent spaces and objects that adhere to standard drawing conventions.
  • Identify the principles of design for sustainability as they impact the design selection, decisions, construction, and implementation.
  • Examine socio-cultural viewpoints that shape design projects.

These learning outcomes interplay perfectly with the previous and next levels of the One Year Vocational Program for the students to progressively grow as a fashion business professional through a personalized class curriculum and hands-on experience.

HOW TO APPLY

The Vocational Programs provide flexibility to the student that does not want to commit for a full year program but wants to start a section of the program to see if it is the right fit. As to this, you are able to apply to the individual levels of the Vocational Programs and then see if you want to continue. To apply to a stand-alone level, students are able to select the ‘11-Week Level Courses’ in the application form.  Students will then be able to apply to their corresponding level and program.

At Istituto Marangoni Miami, we are very student centric and want to provide a fashion opportunity that is attainable and flexible to provide confidence and stability to the student. Our application process is guided by our incredible admissions representatives that will guide you the entire way through. If you need assistance applying, schedule a call here.
