Level 2: Interior design process

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Thursday May 2nd , 2024

Program Description

In this level students will implement the design processes and methodological approach, applying and interpreting a complete interior design proposal that responds to a given brief. The students will be supported in the development of the project through the correlated subjects of the unit that are aimed at developing specific skills and tools fundamental to the design process. During the Interior Design Project course, students will explore and investigate through a guided research process, the foundations for the project direction. The application of the structured input will be expressed through the development of an interior design language and defining style while responding to functional and spatial requirements. Specific tools will be used to develop the project: mood boards, color palettes, charts, and materials boards. Students will acquire interior visualization techniques through the elaboration of technical drawings and sketches and the application of colors, materials, and textures. Students will produce 2-dimensional and 3- dimensional drawings in order to support the design and documentation process.

SUBJECTS

Each level consists of 6 courses for the entire 11-week level. This will total in 18 hours a week of class, each course is 3 hour blocks; the professors grant a break between classes. There will be weekly assignments, midterms and final projects for each class.

DESIGN PROJECT I

In the ‘Design Project I’ class, students will be immersed in the practical application of design methodology, focusing on the intricacies and nuances of interior design. They will be tasked with bringing to life a two-story residence or delving into the unique challenges of a small commercial typology. Through this hands-on experience, students will learn to navigate the complexities of space planning, material selection, and aesthetic considerations, all while adhering to the functional needs of the space. The course will guide them through every phase of the design process, from initial concept development to the final execution. By working on real-world projects, students will hone their skills, develop a keen eye for detail, and gain invaluable experience that will prepare them for future design endeavors.

INTERIOR GRAPHIC STANDARDS

In the ‘Interior Graphic Standards’ class, students will delve into the meticulous world of technical drawing, mastering the art of creating precise and detailed representations of interior spaces. They will be trained to develop scaled technical drawings that accurately depict spatial divisions, ensuring that every element, from walls to doorways, is represented with utmost accuracy. Additionally, the course will cover the intricacies of furniture layouts, teaching students how to position each piece to optimize functionality and aesthetics. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and practical assignments, students will gain a deep understanding of the standards and conventions of interior technical drawing, equipping them with the skills to communicate their design visions clearly and effectively.

DIGITAL RENDERING TECHNIQUES

In the ‘Digital Rendering Techniques’ class, students will be introduced to the dynamic realm of digital illustration, specifically tailored for the visualization of interior spaces. They will learn to craft detailed and lifelike digital interior perspective views, capturing the essence and mood of a space with precision. A significant emphasis will be placed on the application of appropriate materials rendering, ensuring that textures, reflections, and finishes are depicted with realism and accuracy. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice, students will harness advanced digital tools and techniques to bring their design concepts to life. By the end of the course, they will be adept at creating compelling digital illustrations that effectively convey the depth, ambiance, and materiality of interior spaces.

INTERMEDIATE DIGITAL DESIGN

In the ‘Intermediate Digital Design’ class, students will delve deeper into the world of digital design, building upon foundational skills to achieve a higher level of proficiency. They will be trained to adeptly use digital tools to craft cohesive and compelling color palettes and charts, ensuring that their designs resonate with the intended mood and aesthetic. Beyond color theory, the course will also focus on the creation of detailed material boards, allowing students to visually present and coordinate various design elements. Additionally, they will learn the intricacies of assembling specification binders, ensuring that every design detail, from textures to finishes, is meticulously documented. Through a combination of in-depth lectures, hands-on exercises, and practical assignments, students will emerge with a robust skill set, ready to tackle more advanced digital design challenges with confidence and expertise.

3D DIGITAL MODELLING

In the ‘3D Digital Modeling’ class, students will be immersed in the captivating world of three-dimensional design, exploring the vast potential of 3D tools in the realm of interior design. They will be trained to harness the power of these tools, transforming their conceptual ideas into tangible, detailed, and realistic 3D models. The course will cover the entire modeling process, from basic geometry creation to the intricate detailing of interior spaces. Through hands-on exercises, guided tutorials, and real-world projects, students will demonstrate their proficiency in crafting comprehensive interior design projects in a 3D digital environment. By the end of the course, they will have a deep understanding of the tools and techniques required to bring their design visions to life in the virtual space, ready to present and implement in the real world.

HISTORY OF ART, DESIGN & VISUAL CULTURE II

In the ‘History of Art Design and Visual Culture II’ class, students will continue their exploration of the rich tapestry of art and design, this time focusing on the transformative period from the late 19th century to the present day. They will journey through pivotal moments, movements, and innovations that have shaped the contemporary landscape of art, design, and visual culture. From the rise of modernism and the avant-garde movements to the digital revolution and postmodern critiques, students will reflect on the myriad ways in which object aesthetics and functions have evolved in response to societal, technological, and cultural shifts. Through engaging lectures, discussions, and analyses of iconic works and trends, they will gain a profound appreciation for the enduring legacy and ever-evolving nature of art and design in the context of our modern world.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will be able to:

  • Apply design methodology to an interior design project associated with two-story residence or small commercial typology.
  • Develop scaled technical drawings of spatial divisions and furniture layouts.
  • Illustrate interior spaces using digital interior perspective views with appropriate materials rendering.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of digital tools to create color palettes and charts, material boards, and specification binders.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of 3D tools to create an interior design project
  • Reflect on the development of art, design, visual culture, object aesthetics, and function from the late 19th century to present times. Identify the meaning of a work of art or an object of design in its cultural context.

These learning outcomes interplay perfectly with the previous and next levels of the One Year Vocational Program for the students to progressively grow as a fashion business professional through a personalized class curriculum and hands-on experience.

HOW TO APPLY

The Vocational Programs provide flexibility to the student that does not want to commit for a full year program but wants to start a section of the program to see if it is the right fit. As to this, you are able to apply to the individual levels of the Vocational Programs and then see if you want to continue. To apply to a stand-alone level, students are able to select the ‘11-week level courses’ in the application form.  Students will then be able to apply to their corresponding level and program.

At Istituto Marangoni Miami, we are very student centric and want to provide a fashion opportunity that is attainable and flexible to provide confidence and stability to the student. Our application process is guided by our incredible admissions representatives that will guide you the entire way through. If you need assistance applying, schedule a call here.
