Level 1: Interior space planning

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Thursday May 2nd , 2024

Program Description

This level will introduce students to the fundamentals of interior architectural design and space planning, and the basic tools for representation and expression. Fundamental elements of interior architecture, including space, form, and design will be investigated and explored through design exercises and project-based outcomes. Standard drawing conventions for spatial representation will be identified and applied, (scale drawings including plans, elevation, and sections). Design exercises and projects will be accompanied by courses dedicated to the development of hand 2 drawing techniques and to the introduction of dedicated software associated with image manipulation, image corrections and layers, digital layouts, and computer-aided design (CAD). In the Drawing Techniques module, the student will learn basic rules of composition, how to construct perspective views, and how to use shading and shadowing techniques to create representational drawings of interior spaces, forms, and objects.

SUBJECTS

Each level consists of 6 courses for the entire 11-week level. This will total in 18 hours a week of class, each course is 3 hour blocks; the professors grant a break between classes. There will be weekly assignments, midterms and final projects for each class.

INTERIOR DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS

In the interior design elements class, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how spaces are effectively and aesthetically distributed within an interior design project. They will delve into the principles and techniques behind space planning, ensuring that each area serves its intended purpose while maintaining a harmonious flow throughout the design. Through practical exercises and case studies, students will learn to define and optimize the distribution of spaces, taking into consideration factors such as functionality, user comfort, and visual appeal.

2D CAD DRAWINGS

Students will be immersed in the foundational principles of technical drawing conventions, ensuring they can accurately represent and interpret design ideas on paper. The course will emphasize the importance of precision, scale, and clarity in technical drawings. Additionally, students will be introduced to AutoCAD, a leading software in the design industry, specifically tailored for space planning. Through hands-on exercises and guided tutorials, they will learn how to harness the power of AutoCAD to bring their spatial concepts to life, ensuring their designs are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

DRAWING TECHNIQUES

Learn how to apply different drawing techniques, understand diverse media, and execute multiple perspective views with shading and shadowing. They will be taught how to masterfully apply a variety of drawing techniques, from basic sketches to intricate details, ensuring versatility in their artistic repertoire. The course will also delve into the rich world of diverse media, introducing students to different tools and materials that can elevate their artwork. A significant focus will be placed on understanding and executing multiple perspective views, allowing students to capture depth and dimension in their drawings. Through guided lessons and hands-on practice, they will also learn the nuances of shading and shadowing, adding realism and depth to their creations, making them come alive on paper.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL DESIGN

In the ‘Introduction to Digital Design’ class, students will be guided through the foundational aspects of digital design, emphasizing the importance of mastering key software tools in today’s digital age. They will be trained to demonstrate basic competence in the use of industry-standard software like Photoshop and InDesign. These tools, essential for graphic designers, photographers, and digital artists alike, will be explored in-depth, ensuring students grasp their functionalities and potential. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and real-world projects, students will learn how to harness the capabilities of these software platforms for practical application, from photo editing to layout design, setting them on the path to becoming proficient digital designers.

HISTORY OF ART, DESIGN, AND VISUAL CULTURE

In the ‘History of Art Design and Visual Culture’ class, students will embark on a captivating journey through time, tracing the evolution and transformation of art, design, and visual culture. They will delve deep into the rich tapestry of history, examining how object aesthetics and functions have been influenced by societal changes, technological advancements, and cultural shifts. From ancient civilizations to the pivotal moments leading up to the mid 19th century, students will reflect on the milestones and innovations that have shaped the world of art and design. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and analyses of historical precedents, they will gain a profound appreciation for the legacy and impact of past artistic endeavors on contemporary practices.

MATERIALS OF INTERIOR DESIGN

In the ‘Materials of Interior Design’ class, students will dive deep into the intricate world of materials, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their diverse applications in the realm of interior design. They will explore the unique properties, benefits, and challenges of various materials, from traditional to cutting-edge, and how they can be effectively utilized in different design scenarios. Beyond just the materials themselves, students will be introduced to the processes and methods of procurement, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge to source the best materials for their projects. The course will also emphasize the importance of adhering to established codes and standards, ensuring designs are both aesthetically pleasing and compliant. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on workshops, and real-world case studies, students will learn how to integrate these materials seamlessly into their designs, ensuring product specifications are met and projects are implemented to the highest standards.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Define the distribution of spaces in an interior design project.
  • Understand and correctly use technical drawing conventions. Introduction to AutoCAD for space planning.
  • Learn how to apply different drawing techniques, understand diverse media, and execute multiple perspective views with shading and shadowing.
  • Demonstrate basic competence in the use of dedicated software such as Photoshop and InDesign for practical application.
  • Reflect on the development of art, design, visual culture, object aesthetics, and function from historical precedents to the mid 19th century. Students will review the survey of architecture, interiors, furniture and decorative arts.
  • Understand the use of various materials and processes, methods of procurement, codes and standards as applied in product specifications and project implementation.

These learning outcomes interplay perfectly with the next levels of the One Year Vocational Program for the students to progressively grow as an interior designer through a personalized class curriculum and hands-on experience.

HOW TO APPLY

The Vocational Programs provide flexibility to the student that does not want to commit for a full year program but wants to start a section of the program to see if it is the right fit. As to this, you are able to apply to the individual levels of the Vocational Programs and then see if you want to continue. To apply to a stand-alone level, students are able to select the ‘11-week level courses’ in the application form.  Students will then be able to apply to their corresponding level and program.

At Istituto Marangoni Miami, we are very student centric and want to provide a fashion opportunity that is attainable and flexible to provide confidence and stability to the student. Our application process is guided by our incredible admissions representatives that will guide you the entire way through. If you need assistance applying, schedule a call here.
